Meghri

Meghri is a town located in the Syunik Province of Armenia, situated near the Armenian-Iranian interstate border. The town is nestled on the right bank of the lower reaches of the Meghri River, extending along a narrow river valley. It experiences a warm, southern climate.

The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times, with archaeological findings from the Bronze and Iron Ages. In the early 5th century, it was known as Karjavan. Meghri has played a role in historical liberation movements, notably participating in David Bek’s movement in the early 18th century.

Key historical and cultural sites include the 17th-century Meghri Fortress and the Surb Astvatsatsin Churches of the Big and Small Quarters, also from the 17th century. The Meghri Monastery, dating from the 15th-18th centuries, is also found nearby.
