Baghak Kar
Baghak Kar or Baghakakar Fortress is one of the famous fortresses of Syunik and is often mentioned by historians. Some even identify Baghak Kar with Baghaberd, which is not correct. They are different defensive structures located 700-800 meters apart on the tops of high cliffs on opposite banks of the Voghji River.
The fortress has been mentioned by medieval historians since the 4th century. In fact, Baghak Kar Fortress was considered the impregnable gate of Baghaberd Fortress, without capturing which it was impossible to approach the main fortress. Tradition tells that Baghaberd and Baghak Kar were connected by a chain, which was used to provide communication between the two banks by crawling on the belly.
It was the famous hair rope that has been preserved in the memory of generations over the centuries. We learn from history that the fortress was repeatedly attacked by enemies, but heroically resisted, securing the road leading to the Baghaberd fortress. There was also a monastery of the same name in the fortress, where there were numerous treasures and handwritten manuscripts.
Tradition says that a famous warrior was buried in the courtyard of that monastery, who was not a man, but a young girl. She was a famous archer and led the defense of one of the famous fortresses, Aghjkaberd. Syunik historians testify that the enemy captured the Baghak Kar fortress in 1126, after which they plundered the wealth and destroyed the handwritten manuscripts.
