Meghri: The Southern Gateway of Armenia

Nestled in the southeastern embrace of the Zangezur mountain range and caressed by the flowing waters of the Meghri River, the city of Meghri stands as the distinguished southern gateway to Armenia. Situated within the heart of the Syunik region, this city shares its borders with Iran, adding to its unique character. A mere 376 km from the bustling capital of Yerevan, and a mere 73 km from the regional center of Kapan, Meghri is a jewel of the southeast.

Meghri unveils itself as a tale of two districts — ``Mets Tagh``; gracing the left bank of the Meghri River, and ``Pokr Tagh``, nestled upon the river's right bank. With roots tracing back to antiquity, Meghri boasts its status as one of Armenia's oldest settlements, with remnants of the Iron Age still echoing through its streets. The city's foundation in 906 by King Smbat the First adds a regal layer to its history. Crowned by the 10th-11th century Meghri fortress, standing sentinel in the northern expanse of the Mets district, this historic edifice saw rebirth in the 18th century. Its unique distinction lies in being Armenia's sole fortress with towers designed for the deployment of firearms. It was these very features that bolstered the city's defense under the leadership of Davit Bek in 1723, fending off Turkish assaults.

A stone's throw from Meghri lies the Taghamir bridge, a relic from the 17th-18th centuries that adds another layer of charm to the region.

Meghri's landscape is adorned with the grace of 17th-century churches, each telling its own story. St. Astvastatsin, St. Hovhannes, and St. Sargis stand as celebrated landmarks, with Saint Hovhannes' three-nave basilica adorned with intricate frescoes. Known affectionately as the Meghri Monastery, it stands as an intriguing testament to Armenian architectural prowess.

The cityscape of Meghri is punctuated by original houses boasting flat roofs, a canvas upon which gates, doors, and windows have been intricately crafted with a mastery of woodwork. Beyond its architectural treasures, Meghri beckons travelers with its unassuming simplicity, inviting all who venture to experience its charm.
